Sixth Form Rugby!

3 February 2017

This week we had our first ever 6th form rugby match! The team travelled to Beacon Academy in Crowborough for their first 7s match. It was far from 7s weather but despite the cold and fog our boys were eager to go. After losing the toss we were receiving.

Unfortunately the cold weather affected our early ball handling and we conceded two tries in quick succession. We managed to hold firm for the rest of the quarter which finished 0-10. We started the second quarter with renewed vigour and made some good attacks, but we were unable to convert these attempts into points and a swift interception by the Beacon winger put us 0-15 down. From the restart we were on the attack. A moment of genius from Sam Hamilton at fly half saw him kick the ball into space. He chased valiantly but was pushed off the ball close to the line by a Beacon defender. Luckily Podge, close on the chase, was able to sneak behind and ground the ball for our first try.

Our fitness work was paying off and we were able to play a further two quarters. We attacked and defended well and some there were some fantastic tackles from George, Alex, Charlie HK and Charlie Butcher – truly highlighting the Beechwood grit. Sadly some silly handling errors combined with some speedy Beacon players lead to a 32-5 defeat.

The score does not reflect our performance and the boys never gave up in extremely tough conditions. A special mention must go to Danny and Nick who only started playing rugby last term and to Charlie Hume-Kendall who captained the team and lead by example throughout. The team was Charlie H-K, Charlie Butcher, Sam Hamilton, Alex Martin, Nick Yau, George Major, Rob Smythe and Danny Deng.

We now have plenty to work on before our upcoming 7s tournaments and tour to France!
