English as an Additional Language
The EAL department is a well-established centre for students whose first language is not English. Individually tailored programmes of study ensure that students can achieve their potential in all subject areas quickly and effectively.
In small groups students gain competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking, allowing them to integrate with ease into school life.
Sixth Formers are prepared for the IELTS examination for entrance into Higher Education. In addition, confidence in spoken English is enhanced by extra-curricular lessons in Oral Communication; this has become so popular that some students are now opting to take Speech and Drama lessons leading to LAMDA examinations.
Students whose English requires improvement before they begin A-level examination courses may join the Foundation Year Sixth Form. Here they will receive intensive English Lessons with the opportunity to join Year 12 classes in their chosen subjects as their English improves. They will then stay at Beechwood to begin their two-year A-level courses, well prepared and ready to achieve to their potential.
