Music at Beechwood is thriving and permeates all aspects of school life. We believe every child should be able to access and enjoy making music.
We encourage all our children to sing and create music inside and outside of the curriculum. Over a third of the school have private music lessons from our thirteen visiting instrumental and vocal teachers. The department has an outstanding record in the Associated Board, Trinity College, LCM and Rock School examinations. Our GCSE and A Level results are also excellent, with recent students going on to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and The Royal College of Music, as well as other specialist colleges and universities.
Music is taught in the curriculum from Nursery through to Year 9, and is then an option for GCSE and A-Level. Students up to Year 9 have weekly lessons, the exam candidates have significantly more so, and all are taught the skills of listening and appraising, composing and performing, and use of musical language, through the build-up of theoretical skills, practical music making, and with the use of Music Technology. We enjoy cross-curricular teaching (for example the Year 7 Music/Geography Indonesian Project, culminating in a trip to the Gamelan Workshop in the Southbank Centre, London) and taking our classes out to concerts, as well as inviting professional musicians to come in and give demonstrations and workshops. Students who excel in music also have the opportunity to apply for a Music Scholarship when entering the school in Years 7, 9, 10 and Sixth Form.
Our musicians have the opportunity to play and perform in a huge range of extra-curricular music clubs: Recorder Group, Year 7 Band, Year 8 Band, Year 9 Band, Senior Rock Band, Percussion Ensemble, Classical Guitar Ensemble, Junior Chamber Group, Senior Chamber Group and The Beechwood Orchestra. Our singers in the Senior School can join our Chamber Choir ‘Schola Cantorum’, Musical Theatre Club and Gospel Choir. All soloists and ensembles, instrumentalists and singers, perform regularly in concerts, showcases, musical theatre productions and assemblies. ‘Schola Cantorum’ always sings the Anthem and parts of the Mass in our Feast Day Church Services and on special occasions such as Eighth Weekend and Beechwood Day.
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”
The Drama Department at Beechwood produces work of the highest standard.

Recent trips include: Splendid’s The Odyssey & Macbeth, Simon Stephen’s adaptation of A Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-Time, Mike Bartlett’s Bull and Frantic Assemblies Things I Know to be True.

Each year many students express an interest in developing their studies through the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art exams that available at Beechwood. The LAMDA classes take place during the school day at lunch times or after school. Exams can be taken throughout the year.
Additionally, students can book break or lunchtime rehearsal times with the Drama Department, with the aim to extend their studies or produce work for events throughout the year.
